Bhubaneswar, Sep 28: Odisha has collected ₹7,346.31 crore in revenue from gutkha and pan masala products over the last 10 years, with annual collections witnessing a substantial rise during the period.
Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi informed this in the Odisha Legislative Assembly on Monday.
Responding to a question raised by MLA Tankadhar Tripathy, Majhi said Value Added Tax (VAT) and other applicable taxes are imposed on pan masala, gutkha, cigarettes, beedis and other tobacco products sold in the state.
The Odisha government collected ₹1,234.88 crore in revenue from tobacco and pan masala products during 2024-25.
Revenue collection data presented in the Assembly showed a significant increase over the past decade. The state collected ₹264.51 crore in 2016-17, while revenue stood at ₹71.49 crore up to June 2017 and ₹309.53 crore between July 2017 and March 2018.
Collections subsequently increased to ₹480.71 crore in 2018-19, ₹609.90 crore in 2019-20, ₹711.23 crore in 2020-21, ₹876.63 crore in 2021-22 and ₹889.42 crore in 2022-23.
The revenue crossed the ₹1,000-crore mark in 2023-24, reaching ₹1,012.56 crore, before rising further to a record ₹1,234.88 crore in 2024-25.
For the ongoing 2025–26 fiscal year, public receipts from these product categories have already accumulated to Rs 885.45 crore.
