Odisha: Congress announces Ghasiram Majhi as party candidate for Nuapada Assembly By-Poll

Bhubaneswar, October 7: The All India Congress Committee (AICC) has on Tuesday officially declared Ghasiram Majhi as the party's candidate for the upcoming Nuapada Assembly by-poll in Odisha. This announcement comes after the approval of the candidate by Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, ensuring that Majhi will represent the party in the electoral race scheduled for November 11.

The AICC made this decision public through a formal notice issued earlier today, confirming Majhi’s nomination for the by-election, which is expected to be a closely watched contest in the state.

Ghasiram Majhi is no stranger to the political landscape of Nuapada, having previously contested the 2024 Odisha Assembly elections as an independent candidate. During that election, he managed to secure a significant 50,941 votes, a feat that solidified his influence in the Nuapada constituency despite not being affiliated with any major political party.

The Congress party’s swift announcement to field Majhi as its candidate marks the party’s proactive approach in the upcoming by-poll. The Nuapada Assembly by-election, which was triggered by unforeseen circumstances, will be a key battleground for political forces in Odisha, with the stakes high for all contesting parties.

This seat was vacant after the death of the former BJD MLA Rajendra Dholakia

The elections will be held on November 11, and the Congress’s early declaration of Majhi as its candidate indicates the party’s confidence in his ability to make a strong impact in the constituency. Majhi’s prior performance as an independent candidate and his grassroots support in Nuapada could prove vital in strengthening the Congress’s position in the region.

With the Congress making the first move, political observers are keenly watching to see how other parties will respond in terms of candidate announcements as the election date draws closer.
