Bhubaneswar, May 13: Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi, on Wednesday, welcomed the Union Cabinet’s decision to raise the Minimum Support Prices (MSP) for 14 kharif crops for the 2026–27 marketing season.

Deputy Chief Minister Kanak Vardhan Singh Deo, who happens to be an Agriculture & Farmers’ Empowerment Minister, also welcomed the Union Cabinet decision.

The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA), chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, approved the hike as part of the government’s ongoing efforts to ensure remunerative prices for farmers and strengthen rural incomes. The MSP revisions are consistent with the policy of setting support prices at least 1.5 times the all-India weighted average cost of production.

Among the crops, sunflower seed saw the highest absolute increase in MSP at Rs 622 per quintal, followed by cotton at Rs 557 per quintal, niger seed at Rs 515 per quintal, and sesamum at Rs 500 per quintal. The revised prices are expected to encourage crop diversification and promote sustainable agricultural practices.

Taking to the social media platform X, Chief Minister Majhi described the decision as a progressive move that will bolster the agriculture sector and enhance rural prosperity.

“This step will not only strengthen the agricultural economy but also encourage crop diversification, supporting the welfare and dignity of our farmers. The people of Odisha convey their heartfelt gratitude to the Prime Minister for this visionary decision aimed at securing fair prices for farmers and safeguarding their interests,” he said.

Deputy Chief Minister Kanak Vardhan Singh Deo added that the MSP hike underscores the Centre’s commitment to providing fair returns to farmers and boosting the rural economy.

“I fully support this vision, ensuring that every farmer in our state benefits from this policy and experiences the promise of a prosperous future,” Singh Deo noted on social media.

Both leaders emphasized that the Odisha government remains aligned with the Centre’s priorities of farmer welfare, rural development, and building a resilient agricultural sector.
