Jajpur, October 3: Senior BJD leader and former MLA Pranab Balabantray and his supporters were allegedly attacked by a group of around 40-50 armed persons in Madhupurgada Gram Panchayat under Jenapur Police Station of Jajpur district on Sunday.
The incident took place at around 3 PM during the BJD's ongoing statewide Jan Sampark Padayatra.
According to reports, the miscreants carrying swords, axes and other dangerous weapons and assaulted the former MLA and his supporters. Three vehicles, including Balabantray's vehicle, were also allegedly damaged during the violence.
Meanwhile, Balabantray lodged a complaint with the Jajpur SP seeking immediate registration of an FIR and stringent legal action against the persons named in the complaint and their unidentified associates.
Supporters of the BJD leaders gheraoed the SP office demanding immediate arrest of the miscreants.
He also requested immediate preservation and examination of CCTV footage, mobile videos, photographs, police records and other available evidence, along with recovery of the weapons allegedly used and identification of all persons involved.
He urged the authorities to conduct a fair and time-bound investigation and take appropriate stringent legal action against all persons found responsible under the applicable provisions of law.
He also requested an impartial inquiry into the response of police personnel who were reportedly present at the spot during the incident.
