Bhubaneswar, Jul 10: In a life-saving initiative, the Odisha government has announced a Rs25,000 reward for citizens who transport seriously injured road accident victims to hospitals during the “golden hour” the crucial first hour after a traumatic incident when timely medical assistance can make the difference between life and death.
The move is part of the state’s broader strategy to reduce road fatalities and improve emergency medical response. Under the scheme, individuals who assist victims without waiting for an ambulance will be recognised and financially compensated for their swift action.
“This initiative aims to encourage people to come forward and help accident victims without fear or hesitation,” said a senior official. “The compensation is not just a monetary reward but a tribute to their courage and compassion.”
To further support Good Samaritans, the state has reiterated that, in line with existing Supreme Court guidelines, those who help accident victims will not face harassment or questioning by police or hospital authorities. This protection is crucial in addressing the bystander effect — a psychological phenomenon where people avoid intervening due to fear of legal entanglements or involvement in lengthy procedures.
Officials hope the ₹25,000 incentive will encourage more citizens to act promptly in emergencies, potentially saving countless lives across the state.
So the next time you witness a road mishap, remember: stepping up could not only earn you recognition and reward but may also be the difference between life and death for someone in need.
