Bhubaneswar, Sept 19: Odisha consolidated its position as the fourt state in bamboo resources among all the states across the nation while Madhya Pradesh topped having highest bamboo bearing area of 1.84 million hectare.
According to the recent Indian Forest Survey Report (IFSR) 2021, Madhya Pradesh has a highest bamboo bearing area of 18,394 square kilometres followed by Arunachal Pradesh (15,739 sq km), Maharashtra (13,526 sq km) and Odisha (11,199 sq km).
The total bamboo bearing area estimated in the country is 1,49,443 sq kilometres.
Odisha Bamboo Development Agency has been set up by state Forest Department. It looks after integrated development of bamboo sector. It is also implementing the programme of National Bamboo Mission (NBM).
Mission Objectives
To promote the growth of the bamboo sector through an area based regionally differentiated strategy
To increase the coverage of area under bamboo in potential areas, with suitable species to enhance yields
To promote marketing of bamboo and bamboo-based products
To establish convergence and synergy among stakeholders of bamboo sector
To promote setting up bamboo based industries
To promote, develop and disseminate technologies through a seamless blend of traditional wisdom and modern scientific knowledge.
To generate employment opportunities for skilled and unskilled persons, especially unemployed youths
