Sundargarh, August 19: Odisha-born scuba diver Priyadarshi Panigrahi has achieved a remarkable milestone by completing his 100th scuba dive in the waters of Fuvahmulah in the Maldives, diving alongside massive tiger sharks.
The Dubai-based Odia scuba diver and senior corporate executive completed his landmark dive at one of the world’s renowned tiger shark diving destinations. Fuvahmulah, located just south of the Equator, is internationally known for its frequent tiger shark sightings and is regarded as a major destination for shark diving.
What made the milestone even more special was the presence of Priyadarshi’s 16-year-old daughter, Tishya Panigrahi, who accompanied him during the dive. Tishya is herself an Advanced Open Water Diver and has also earned recognition for her diving achievements.
After descending into the deep blue waters, the father-daughter duo encountered several tiger sharks of different sizes. Some of the sharks were estimated to be around 15 feet long and weighed several hundred kilograms.
Several sharks reportedly came within just a few centimetres of the duo, making the dive a thrilling and unforgettable experience. The rare underwater encounter added a unique dimension to Priyadarshi’s 100th, or ‘Century Dive’.
Priyadarshi took up scuba diving as a passion in 2012. Over the years, he has completed dives at several locations and established himself as one of Odisha’s experienced recreational scuba divers.
Tiger sharks are among the largest predatory sharks in the ocean. They can grow to around 15 feet (4.5 metres) in length, while particularly large specimens can weigh up to several hundred kilograms.
Shumi, owner of Fuvahmulah’s diving centre Scuba Butler and a renowned diving instructor from the Maldives, praised Priyadarshi’s achievement. He described completing the 100th dive amid tiger sharks in Fuvahmulah as an extraordinary milestone.
Priyadarshi and Tishya have previously undertaken several scuba diving expeditions together and have created memorable milestones in the deep blue sea. Their latest adventure has added another remarkable chapter to their diving journey.
