Sambalpur, Mar 6: Sambalpur Police has arrested a six-member women’s chain-snatching gang that had been operating in various crowded places across Odisha for several years.

According to police, the accused—who are from outside the state—used to disguise themselves in local attire and mingle with crowds before targeting unsuspecting victims. They would take advantage of busy locations and quickly snatch gold chains.

Police said the gang was also involved in stealing chains from devotees at the Samaleswari Temple. Their activities were reported from several locations including the Bali Jatra in Cuttack and the Dhanu Yatra in Bargarh. Incidents were also reported in Belpahar and Jharsuguda.

Police officials said the gang had been carrying out such thefts for nearly 12 years. To stay in Odisha, the accused allegedly used fake identity cards.

During the operation, police seized around 50 grams of gold from the accused. Further investigation into the case is underway.
