Nepal President Ramchandra Paudel resigns amid escalating unrest

Kathmandu, September 9: Nepal President Ramchandra Paudel resigned on Tuesday, following a surge of unrest across the country. His resignation came shortly after Nepal's Prime Minister, KP Sharma Oli, stepped down in the wake of widespread anti-government protests. Demonstrators had targeted the private residences of senior political figures and vandalized Parliament.

The protests continued into their second day, despite the government’s decision to lift the ban on social media apps. The violence has claimed at least 22 lives and left hundreds injured, with police deploying deadly force to try to control the situation.

In Kathmandu, large groups of protesters rampaged through media institutions, including Kantipur, and set fire to the President's residence, looting several items in the process. The Communist Party office was also set ablaze.

In response to the escalating violence, the government imposed an indefinite curfew in Birgunj, a city near the Indian border, following widespread arson. Protesters, particularly those active on social media, have increasingly called for further damage to public property.

However, student groups have stepped in, organizing to protect public assets and prevent further destruction. In a statement, Nepal’s Gen Z protesters, who have played a leading role in the demonstrations, appealed for calm and pledged to avoid harming public infrastructure.

"This country is now under our leadership. Let’s protect public property and move forward with patience and resolve," read the appeal.

The letter further noted that with the resignation of Prime Minister Oli, the situation had created an opening for a new political solution.

The protesters’ demands include the formation of a civilian government led by a universally acceptable figure and the holding of new elections. "Only through unity can we build a secure future for Nepal," the statement concluded.
