BCCI’s New Mandate: Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli Must Play Domestic Cricket for Team India ODI Spot

The landscape of Indian cricket is shifting, and even its biggest stars are not exempt. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has delivered a firm and clear message to veterans Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli: if they want to continue playing One-Day Internationals (ODIs) for India, they must return to the domestic circuit.

This new BCCI selection policy marks a significant change, directly addressing the unique situation of the two stalwarts. Both Kohli, 37, and Rohit, 38, have retired from Test and T20 International cricket, making ODIs the only format they play for Team India.

With long gaps between ODI series, the board and team management are reportedly concerned about the superstars maintaining "match-fitness." Sources within the BCCI confirmed that the message was conveyed clearly: participation in domestic cricket is now mandatory for them to be considered for national selection.

The Vijay Hazare Test

This policy isn't just a future plan; its implementation is imminent. The first test for this mandate will likely be the upcoming Vijay Hazare Trophy, India's premier domestic 50-over tournament.

A crucial window appears on December 24, which falls neatly between India's home ODI series against South Africa (ending December 9) and a subsequent series against New Zealand (starting January 11).

According to reports, Rohit Sharma has already responded positively. He has reportedly informed the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) that he will be available for the Vijay Hazare Trophy. Rohit has also been spotted training at Mumbai's Sharad Pawar indoor academy, possibly even eyeing the Syed Mushtaq Ali T20 tournament starting later this month.

However, the situation surrounding Virat Kohli remains uncertain. Kohli, who now resides in London, has not yet clarified his availability. The BCCI is understood to be hopeful that he will also participate.

No Compromise on Fitness

This move reinforces the stance recently taken by Ajit Agarkar, the chairman of the selection committee. Last month, Agarkar emphasized that domestic cricket is essential for all players.

"We made it clear... whenever players are available, they should be playing domestic cricket," Agarkar stated. "That’s the only way you’ll keep yourself sharp."

This isn't the first time the board has pushed its senior players in this direction. Last season, both players made rare appearances in the Ranji Trophy after long absences—Kohli for Delhi after 12 years and Rohit for Mumbai after 10.

While Agarkar mentioned that the two legends are not on "trial" for every game, he also noted that the 2027 World Cup is "a long way away." The new BCCI selection policy sends an unmistakable message: form and fitness, proven on the domestic stage, are non-negotiable for everyone.
