Nayara Energy Gasoline Reaches Russia through Third-Party Traders

Indian refiner gasoline reaches Russia to ease supply shortages

Gasoline produced by Indian refiner Nayara Energy is flowing into Russia through international traders, filling critical supply gaps created by recent infrastructure damage. Industry sources confirm that shipments totaling roughly 60,000 metric tons have already left the Vadinar facility in Gujarat. Following strict international sanctions last year, Nayara shifted to exclusively processing Russian crude oil, which highlights the shifting geopolitical energy trade between New Delhi and Moscow. This development creates a unique trade loop where Russian oil returns home as refined fuel.

Bypassing Direct Export Routes

India’s Petroleum Minister Hardeep Singh Puri recently clarified that domestic oil companies do not directly sell fuel to Russian buyers. International brokers, however, regularly purchase refined products from Indian facilities and redirect them to markets facing immediate shortages. Russia desperately requires these imports because ongoing drone strikes have severely degraded its domestic refining capacity, leading to rationing and long queues at petrol pumps. Moscow consumes at least 110,000 tons of fuel daily during peak summer months. Alternative supply chains remain vital for stabilizing their internal market and controlling soaring domestic prices.

Operations at Vadinar Facility

Nayara Energy operates the second-largest refining complex in India, possessing a processing capacity of 400,000 barrels per day. Russian state-owned giant Rosneft holds a significant 49 percent stake in this Gujarat-based entity. Recent tanker tracking data reveals that vessels loading refined fuel at Vadinar frequently navigate through the Suez Canal, intentionally bypassing their initially listed Middle Eastern destinations. By relying entirely on third-party intermediaries, the refiner avoids direct conflict with European Union restrictions while maintaining production volume. This indirect export route allows Russian markets to seamlessly absorb fuel originally refined from their own crude oil.
