Bhubaneswar, November 7: Biju Janata Dal (BJD) president and Leader of Opposition Naveen Patnaik has decided not to celebrate Diwali this year in solidarity with people affected by floods and landslides triggered by Cyclone Arnab in Odisha.
Patnaik announced the decision as a mark of solidarity with the affected residents of Ganjam, Gajapati and Kandhamal districts, who are facing hardships in the aftermath of the natural calamity.
During his visit to the flood-affected areas on Saturday, Patnaik said that heavy rains and flooding triggered by Cyclone Arnab had caused extensive damage in Ganjam and Gajapati districts, leaving many people in distress.
He also expressed concern over the landslides in Kandhamal district, where some people reportedly remained missing after being trapped under debris.
In view of the devastation and suffering of the affected families, Patnaik has decided to refrain from Diwali celebrations this year and stand in solidarity with those impacted by the calamity.
