Odisha guarantees iron ore supply to bolster local industries.
Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi has officially assured the Indian Steel Association (ISA) that Odisha-based industries will receive adequate and prioritized iron ore supplies to sustain their operations. This commitment follows a high-level meeting in Bhubaneswar where an ISA delegation, headed by President and Member of Parliament Naveen Jindal, discussed the roadmap for the state's industrial expansion.
Naveen Jindal emphasized that the current mining policies and auction mechanisms in Odisha stand as the most efficient in the nation, contributing significantly to state revenue. However, the delegation pointed out that scaling up iron ore production remains a necessity to keep pace with the rapid expansion of steel plants. The ISA specifically requested that the Odisha Mining Corporation (OMC) provide preferential allocation to local units to protect them from market volatility.
Historically, Odisha has transitioned from being a raw mineral exporter to a value-addition hub, aiming to contribute nearly a quarter of India’s total steel output. This shift is critical as the state seeks to reach a 100 MTPA (Million Tonnes Per Annum) production capacity by the year 2030.
Reaching the ambitious 100 MTPA milestone requires more than just raw materials. The delegation proposed the formation of a dedicated Task Force to design a logistics roadmap. This group would focus on building the infrastructure needed to transport vast quantities of finished steel and incoming minerals. Furthermore, the ISA sought specific fiscal incentives to attract the massive capital investments required for such large-scale industrial growth.
Top administrative officials attended the session, including Chief Secretary Anu Garg and Development Commissioner Deoranjan Kumar Singh. Their presence indicates a unified government approach toward industrial problem-solving. Industry titans from Tata Steel, JSW, and AMNS also joined the dialogue, representing a unified front of the nation's largest metal producers.
Responding to concerns regarding global economic shifts and tensions in the Middle East, Jindal noted that the 'Atmanirbhar Bharat' initiative serves as a robust shield for the Indian economy. By strengthening domestic production chains, the country remains insulated from external supply chain disruptions.
Government representatives assured the industry leaders that inter-departmental coordination would be enhanced to resolve bottlenecks. The focus remains on making Odisha a global steel hub while ensuring that the benefits of mineral wealth remain within the state through local processing and employment generation.
