Unnati Hooda opens BWF World Championships with straight-game win
Indian badminton prospect Unnati Hooda kicked off her BWF World Championships campaign with an impressive straight-games victory in New Delhi on Tuesday. Hooda defeated her opponent Thet Htar Thuzar with a final score of 22-20, 21-16. This match marked an exciting start for the young player on her debut on the world stage. India has consistently produced top-tier badminton talent over recent decades, raising expectations for emerging stars like Hooda.
Early in the match, Hooda focused on adapting to the venue. She noted that her years of practice helped her accurately judge whether the shuttle would land in or out. She admitted that drift conditions can complicate play. However, she found it relatively manageable to track the shuttle during this specific contest.
Both players fought intensely during the opening game. Hooda spent that time getting used to the court drift while facing strong resistance from her opponent. She explained that staying patient during the final five points allowed her to regain control as Thuzar began making errors. Realising the attacking advantage from her side of the court in the second game, Hooda committed to an aggressive strategy. Playing faster and dictating the pace ultimately helped her secure the win.
Earlier on Tuesday, Indian mixed doubles pair Ruthvika Gadde and Rohan Kapoor suffered a tough loss. They faced off against Canadian duo Crystal Lai and Jonathan Lai in a tense opening match. The Canadian team emerged victorious with a final scoreline of 22-20, 19-21, 17-21, ending the Indian pair's run early in the tournament.
