Bhubaneswar, June 17: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Tuesday informed that the southwest monsoon has advanced further and now covers the entire state of Odisha.
"Southwest monsoon has further advanced and today it covered the remaining parts of Odisha," said the Meteorological Centre in Bhubaneswar.
The monsoon had made an early onset over parts of Odisha on May 28—nearly two weeks ahead of the usual arrival date of June 10. However, its progress stalled shortly after, with limited rainfall and subdued activity across several regions.
With the monsoon gaining momentum again, widespread rainfall is expected across Odisha in the coming days. The IMD has forecast heavy rains in many parts of the state over the next three days, aided by the formation of a low-pressure area nearby.
As of June 17, Odisha recorded a seasonal cumulative rainfall of 73.0 mm since June 1, compared to the normal value of 91.4 mm for this period. Rainfall distribution across the state varied: one district recorded a "large excess," five had "excess" rainfall, 12 districts experienced "normal" levels, 11 were marked as "deficient," and one district was categorized under "large deficient."
In its latest update, the IMD noted that the Northern Limit of the Monsoon now passes through Deesa, Indore, Panchmarhi, Mandla, Ambikapur, Hazaribagh, and Supaul.
With the full coverage of Odisha by the monsoon and favorable weather systems developing, residents are advised to stay alert for potential heavy rainfall and associated weather conditions.
