Mithun Manhas unanimously elected as 37th President of BCCI

New Delhi, Sept 28: Mithun Manhas was unanimously elected as the 37th president of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) during the Annual General Meeting (AGM) held at the board’s headquarters in Mumbai on Sunday.

With this, Manhas (45) became the first person from Jammu and Kashmir to head the BCCI, and also the first uncapped player to lead the world’s richest cricket board.

Meanwhile, Devajit Saikia will continue as BCCI secretary, and Rajeev Shukla will remain in his role as vice-president. Prabhtej Bhatia from the Chhattisgarh State Cricket Sangh has been appointed as the new joint secretary, while former India spinner Raghuram Bhat has taken over as treasurer.

It is worth noting that Manhas succeeds Roger Binny, who stepped down from the post of BCCI President earlier this year after turning 70.

A member of India’s 1983 World Cup-winning squad, Binny held the position for nearly three years.

Manhas filed his nomination for the top post on September 21. His appointment aligns with the recommendations of the Supreme Court-appointed Lodha Committee, which mandates that a former player should head the board.

Born in Jammu, Mithun Manhas is a former Delhi cricketer who enjoyed a prolific domestic career from 1997-98 to 2016-17, featuring in 157 First-Class, 130 List A, and 55 IPL matches.

He boasts an impressive First-Class record, amassing 9,714 runs, including 27 centuries, along with 4,126 runs in List A cricket.

While Manhas’s elevation to the top BCCI post may have surprised some, he is no stranger to cricket administration.

Toward the end of his playing career, the middle-order batter returned to Jammu and Kashmir, where he played for a season before transitioning into administration. He later became part of the BCCI-appointed sub-committee tasked with managing cricket affairs in the Jammu and Kashmir Cricket Association (JKCA).

In addition to his role in cricket administration, Mithun Manhas has also built a strong coaching portfolio, having worked with several IPL teams including Kings XI Punjab, Royal Challengers Bengaluru, and Gujarat Titans. He has also served as a consultant for Bangladesh’s U-19 men’s cricket team.
