Mithun Chakraborty, one of Bollywood's most renowned actor, began his illustrious career as a junior artist. His debut in Mrinal Sen’s Mrigayaa (1976) earned him his first National Award for Best Actor.
He has also acted in various odia movis like Ae Jugara Krushna Sudama, Sahara Jaluchi, Kurukshetra, Mahasangram, Baroda, Coolie, Raja, Mauda Mani, Pratigyan, Maa Kande Aji Puate Pain, Krushna, and Sangharsa.
Mithun's popularity mounted with Suraksha, where he played Officer Gopi/Gunmaster G9, establishing him as a top actor of the 1980s. During that decade, he appeared in over 110 films, becoming a leading figure in Indian cinema.
The release of Disco Dancer in 1982 further paved his legacy as one of Bollywood’s best "dancing heroes. Over a career spanning more than four decades, Mithun has acted in over 350 films across various languages, including Hindi, Bengali, Odia, Bhojpuri, Telugu, and Punjabi. His notable works include Boxer, Pyaar Jhukta Nahi, Watan Ke Rakhwale, and the critically acclaimed Tahader Katha (1992), which won him his second National Film Award.
Mithun's portrayal of Ramakrishnan in Swami Vivekananda (1998) earned him a third National Award. His return to Hindi cinema in 2005 saw him rising star in films like Veer, Housefull 2, and OMG – Oh My God. Mithun has also been instrumental in shaping the dance reality show Dance India Dance, serving as the grandmaster.
With 14 blockbusters and 31 super hits, including iconic films like Disco Dancer and The Kashmir Files (2022), Mithun Chakraborty’s legacy is undeniable. In recognition of his outstanding contribution to cinema, the veteran actor, now 74, will be honoured with the prestigious Dadasaheb Phalke Award.
