Maruti Suzuki debuts India's first ethanol-powered flex-fuel hatchback
Maruti Suzuki has officially entered the alternative energy space by introducing the production-ready WagonR Flex Fuel, marking the debut of the first E85-compliant passenger car in India. Unveiled in the presence of Union Ministers Nitin Gadkari and Hardeep Singh Puri, this mass-market hatchback represents a major shift toward local biofuels. The vehicle operates on ethanol-gasoline blends fluctuating between E20 and E85, allowing it to function predominantly on 85 percent ethanol combined with 15 percent conventional gasoline.
Adapting a popular family hatchback to handle highly corrosive biofuel required extensive modifications from the engineering team. Standard fuel lines degrade quickly under high alcohol content, which naturally retains moisture. To combat this, the auto manufacturer installed corrosion-resistant fuel injectors, heavy-duty pumps, and specialised heated fuel rails to guarantee smooth cold starts during lower temperatures. Integrated smart sensors continuously assess the fluid ratio, permitting the engine to alter performance characteristics seamlessly.
Tailpipe emissions drop by up to 79 percent when running on maximum ethanol configurations compared to conventional fossil fuels, aiding clean air initiatives significantly. Managing Director Hisashi Takeuchi stated that this model forms part of a wider green mobility path including hybrid vehicles, electric options, and compressed biogas projects.
However, widespread practical use depends entirely on commercial fuel availability. Government plans outline rolling out approximately 500 dedicated E85 dispensing stations by late 2026, focusing initially on busy transit zones like Delhi-NCR and the Mumbai-Pune corridor, before reaching a target of 5,000 national distribution spots by the end of 2027.
