Baripada, April 3: A tragic incident was reported from Odisha’s Mayurbhanj district, where a man died after a live fish became lodged in his throat while he was fishing.
The incident occurred in Dighi village under the jurisdiction of Bangriposi police station. The deceased has been identified as Abinash Bijuli, a local resident.
According to reports, Abinash had caught a ‘Kau’ (Indian Koi) fish from a village pond on Friday morning. In an attempt to prevent the fish from slipping away, he placed it in his mouth. However, the live fish suddenly moved deeper into his throat and got stuck in his airway, causing him to choke.
He was rushed to the Bangriposi Community Health Centre in critical condition. However, he later succumbed.
Family members have accused the attending doctor of gross medical negligence. Abinash’s grandfather, Bankim Chandra Bijuli, a former sarpanch, alleged that despite repeated requests, the doctor failed to provide timely treatment. He also claimed that the doctor behaved rudely and made casteist remarks.
The family further stated that instead of administering immediate care, the doctor referred Abinash to Baripada, which caused a crucial delay in treatment. They believe this delay contributed to his death.
Police have taken custody of the body and sent it for post-mortem examination. An investigation has been launched to determine the exact circumstances of the death, including the allegations of medical negligence.
