New Delhi, March 9: The Lok Sabha saw disruptions on Monday as opposition parties demanded a debate on the West Asia crisis. External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar made a suo-motu statement on the situation, but the session was repeatedly adjourned due to protests over the opposition’s resolution to remove Speaker Om Birla. The opposition, lacking the numbers to pass the resolution, continued to disrupt the House, leading to multiple adjournments.

Jaishankar expressed deep concern over the ongoing conflict in West Asia, which began on February 28, involving Israel, the U.S., Iran, and several Gulf nations. He stressed the importance of dialogue and diplomacy to de-escalate tensions. The government had already issued a statement on February 28, urging restraint from all sides. Jaishankar also mentioned that the Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) had met on March 1 to address the security of the Indian community, particularly in Iran and the Gulf region.

Jaishankar emphasized that the conflict's impact on regional stability is a significant concern for India, given its close ties with the region. Nearly one crore Indians live and work in the Gulf, and the region is critical for India’s energy security and trade. He also highlighted the risks to Indian nationals in merchant shipping, with two mariners already lost and one missing.

The government is continuously monitoring the situation and coordinating efforts to support the Indian community and protect national interests. Jaishankar reiterated the call for diplomacy and an early end to the conflict.
