Dhenkanal, Aug 12: A 47-year-old labourer was killed on Monday when soil caved in on him inside a laterite stone quarry near Indupur village in Dhenkanal district.
The man, identified as Akshay Nayak from Besalia village, had gone to the Gundapashi quarry to work, as part of his daily routine. While he was working, a section of soil collapsed, burying him under the debris.
An earth-moving machine was used to rescue him, but he was declared dead at the site. Police were notified, and Sub-Inspector Kumud Chandra Biswal of Sadar police station arrived at the scene. The body was recovered and sent to the Dhenkanal District Headquarters Hospital for post-mortem.
Police have seized the earth-moving machine that was used during the rescue operation.
