IIT Hyderabad professor wins national award for climate research
President Droupadi Murmu presented the National Teachers Award 2026 to Professor Kirti Chandra Sahu of IIT Hyderabad on September 5, recognising his exceptional work in chemical engineering and atmospheric studies. India relies heavily on accurate monsoon forecasts for agricultural planning, making advanced weather prediction tools crucial for the national economy.
Sahu built an innovative experimental facility completely from scratch to study falling raindrops. His equipment recreates the exact atmospheric conditions that water droplets face as they travel from high-altitude clouds down to the ground. By examining the shape and size variations of these raindrops at different heights, his research directly improves climate modelling accuracy and overall rainfall prediction.

Ministry of Education officials praised his early role as a founding faculty member of his institution. Beyond his laboratory achievements, he actively guides students and designs modern educational programs that shape new engineers. His colleagues at the institute celebrated this national recognition on social media, noting how his daily dedication strengthens their academic environment.
Top scientific bodies have previously celebrated his professional accomplishments. He holds fellowships with several highly respected organizations, including the UK-based Institute of Physics, the Indian Academy of Sciences, and the Indian National Academy of Engineering. Sahu has also secured the prestigious J C Bose Grant alongside the VASVIK Award. His dual focus on high-level climate research and active classroom mentorship sets an inspiring standard for educators across the country.
