Anarchy, ruckus, street drama: BJP rips into Opposition over Supreme Court protests against CEC Gyanesh Kumar

New Delhi, October 12:The BJP on Monday strongly criticised the Opposition INDIA bloc over its ‘March for Democracy’ protest towards the Supreme Court, accusing its leaders of creating disorder and undermining constitutional institutions.

BJP spokesperson and MP Sudhanshu Trivedi accused Rahul Gandhi and other Opposition leaders of attempting to create anarchy, while Anurag Thakur termed the Congress leader’s allegations against constitutional bodies baseless. Union Ministers Kiren Rijiju and Jyotiraditya Scindia also criticised the protest, alleging that the Opposition was undermining democratic institutions.

The INDIA bloc leaders filed a petition under Article 32 of the Constitution challenging the Election Commission of India’s Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. The plea seeks a stay on the exercise pending judicial consideration and an independent committee headed by a retired Supreme Court judge to review its implementation and related technical systems.

The petition names Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, Election Commissioners Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Vivek Joshi, and the Election Commission of India. The Opposition has also sought disclosure of relevant records concerning the SIR process.

Meanwhile, the Supreme Court Bar Association condemned social media remarks calling for Chief Justice of India Surya Kant’s resignation, stating that such statements undermine the judiciary. It also reiterated that citizens have the right to seek legal remedies through the courts.
