Cuttack, March 16: A devastating fire at SCB Medical College and Hospital has claimed more than 10 lives and left several others injured, triggering shock and grief across the state. The incident was confirmed by the Police Commissioner.

Leader of the Opposition Naveen Patnaik expressed deep sorrow over the tragic incident and conveyed condolences to the bereaved families. He also wished a speedy recovery for the injured and urged authorities to ensure the best possible treatment for them.

Patnaik directed the Cuttack Mayor and the MLA of Tangi-Choudwar to immediately reach the spot and extend necessary assistance to the affected families. Sources said he is also likely to visit the hospital to meet the injured patients.

According to reports, around 22 patients were undergoing treatment in the ward where the fire broke out. The blaze spread rapidly, leaving little time to shift the patients to safety. Many of the victims reportedly died due to suffocation and severe burn injuries.

The incident created an atmosphere of panic and grief within the hospital premises. Other patients from the affected ward were shifted to different wards as a precautionary measure.

The exact cause of the fire is yet to be ascertained. Authorities have ordered a high-level investigation into the incident, while police and administrative officials remain at the site monitoring the situation.
