Chennai and Kerala Likely to Host Bangladesh Matches as Sri Lanka Move Ruled Out

ICC explores southern venues amid ongoing scheduling dispute

Uncertainty continues to surround the upcoming marquee cricket tournament co-hosted by India and Sri Lanka. Recent reports indicate that the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) is unlikely to get its wish of moving Bangladesh T20 World Cup fixtures to the island nation of Sri Lanka. Instead, the International Cricket Council (ICC) and the BCCI are reportedly looking at alternative venues within India to resolve the ongoing dispute.

Tensions Flare Over Venues

Relations between the Indian and Bangladeshi cricket boards recently soured following controversies regarding the IPL and player contracts. In response to these diplomatic sporting tensions, the BCB formally requested the ICC to relocate their matches from India to Sri Lanka, citing security concerns. Originally, the Tigers were scheduled to play three group-stage matches at Eden Gardens in Kolkata and one final group game at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.

South India Emerges as the Solution

With the tournament fast approaching, logistical challenges make shifting games to another country difficult. According to recent updates, the ICC and BCCI have identified Chennai and Thiruvananthapuram as viable alternatives. Both the Tamil Nadu Cricket Association (TNCA) and the Kerala Cricket Association (KCA) have been alerted about the potential changes.

While no official announcement has been released, officials from both state associations have expressed their readiness to step in. The TNCA has reportedly assured the governing bodies that the historic Chepauk stadium, which is already hosting seven matches including a potential India vs Australia clash, can handle the additional load. Officials cited the availability of eight pitches at the venue as a key factor in ensuring smooth operations.

Waiting for a Response

Despite the flurry of behind-the-scenes activity, BCB President Aminul Islam Bulbul stated that they have not yet received a formal response from the ICC regarding their relocation request. As it stands, the likelihood of matches moving to Sri Lanka is slim, and the focus has shifted firmly toward the southern Indian venues.
