Puri, Nov 26: Today marks the auspicious occasion of Margashira Shukla Shasthi or Prabharana Shasthi, a significant day in the religious calendar. On this day, Srimandir witnesses the ritual of Odhana Shasthi where the deity is adorned with special garments to protect against the cold, symbolizing both devotion and the divine blessings of Lord Jagannath.

As part of the tradition, Lord Jagannath is dressed in winter clothes to shield him from the winter chill. After the sakala dhoopa, six idols are adorned, including the horse idol, which is part of the grand Odhan Shasthi ceremony. The Lord is dressed by skilled artisans, including Darji Sardars, who carefully prepare garments like Patani, Geetagovinda Paata, and Suta Paata.

The special winter attire for Lord Jagannath continues until Magha Shukla Panchami, marking the end of the colder months. Each day, the deity is draped in different colored garments, creating a spectacular display of hues and textures. The attire is not only a form of respect but is also a ritual to ensure the Lord’s well-being through the cold season.

In addition to the spiritual significance of this day, the ceremony of Odhan Shasthi is also a reminder of the twelve divine journeys of Lord Jagannath. These symbolic journeys represent his various divine manifestations, and the Ghoda Lagi ceremony is believed to bring immense spiritual merit to the devotees who witness it. It is said that participating in or observing this ritual grants the devotee the blessings of Punya from several lifetimes, making it a day of great importance for all who visits the temple.
