Justice B.R. Gavai to take oath as 52nd Chief Justice of India on Wednesday

New Delhi, May 13: Justice B.R. Gavai will be sworn in as the 52nd Chief Justice of India (CJI) on Wednesday, marking a historic moment as the first Buddhist to assume the highest judicial office in the country.

President Droupadi Murmu will administer the oath of office to Justice Gavai, who will succeed the outgoing Chief Justice, Sanjiv Khanna. His appointment has been made by the President under Article 124(2) of the Constitution, with the Ministry of Law and Justice officially notifying the decision.

Currently, the seniormost judge of the Supreme Court, Justice Gavai, was elevated to the apex court on May 24, 2019. In his tenure spanning nearly six years, he has been part of approximately 700 benches and has dealt with a diverse array of cases, including those involving constitutional and administrative matters, civil and criminal law, commercial litigation, arbitration, and environmental issues.

Justice Gavai has authored nearly 300 judgments, many of them from Constitution Benches, reinforcing the principles of justice, upholding constitutional values, and safeguarding fundamental, human, and legal rights.

He began his judicial career as a permanent judge of the Bombay High Court on November 12, 2005. Throughout his tenure, he handled various assignments at the Principal Bench in Mumbai as well as at the benches in Nagpur, Aurangabad, and Panaji.
