The victim, identified as Gitanjali alias Dipika, hailed from Jaleswar in Balasore district. She resided with her husband, Kunjabihiri Dutta, in Bapuji Nagar. Dutta, who operates a mobile repair shop, had hired a carpenter named Kalu for renovation work at his shop. Kalu had been staying in Dutta's residence for about 20 days to oversee the renovations. During this period, it's reported that both Kalu and Dipika developed feelings for each other.
Kalu proposed to Dipika, suggesting they elope and start a life together. However, Dipika declined, opting to remain loyal to her husband. In a fit of rage, Kalu allegedly stabbed Dipika while Dutta was occupied at his shop. After committing the crime, Kalu fled from the scene.
Dipika was rushed to Capital Hospital in critical condition and later transferred to SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack. Despite medical efforts, she succumbed to her injuries during treatment.
Following a complaint lodged by Dipika's husband, the Capital Police initiated an investigation and launched a search operation to apprehend Kalu.
