Bhubaneswar, August 1: The first-year classes for the Integrated Teacher Education Programme (ITEP) for the academic session 2026–27 commenced across Odisha on Saturday.

The programme has been introduced in 15 higher education institutions under the Higher Education Department, including seven universities and eight government colleges.

Addressing students through a virtual interaction, Higher Education Minister Suryabanshi Suraj congratulated the newly admitted students and wished them success in their academic journey.

He said the Integrated Teacher Education Programme has been introduced in line with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020.

The Minister highlighted that earlier, students had to complete a three-year undergraduate degree followed by a two-year B.Ed. programme, taking five years in total to complete their teacher education. With the introduction of the ITEP, students can now enrol directly after Class XII and complete the programme within four years. Admissions to the programme have been conducted through the National Common Entrance Test (NCET).

Suraj said the curriculum has been designed in accordance with the provisions of NEP 2020, with a focus on building a strong academic foundation for teacher education. Under the programme, students can pursue two major subjects along with minor subjects. The curriculum has also been designed with a multidisciplinary approach to enhance academic excellence and holistic learning.

Describing students as the future of the nation, the Minister said those pursuing ITEP today would become the educators and academic leaders of tomorrow. He extended his best wishes to all students for a bright and successful future.

During the virtual meeting, newly admitted students shared their experiences and expressed their gratitude to the Higher Education Department and the Minister for introducing the programme.

Bargarh MLA Ashwini Kumar Sarangi joined the meeting virtually. Director of Higher Education Kali Prasanna Mohapatra, Additional Secretary Prativa Sahu, Joint Secretary Mousumi Nayak and other officials were also present.
