Iran demands end to US naval blockade before resuming diplomatic talks

Lifting naval blockades remains Iran's non-negotiable demand for peace.

Iran has officially conditioned the resumption of diplomatic negotiations on the immediate removal of the United States naval blockade. UN Ambassador Amir Saeid Iravani clarified that Tehran views the current maritime restrictions as a direct breach of existing ceasefire agreements. Speaking from the UN headquarters, Iravani indicated that while Iran remains prepared for a political solution, dialogue cannot proceed while Washington maintains its aggressive stance in international waters.

Current friction centers on the Strait of Hormuz, a critical maritime corridor responsible for roughly one-fifth of the world’s oil and liquefied natural gas transit. This waterway holds immense significance for India, as disruptions here directly impact New Delhi’s energy security and fuel pricing.

Stalemate over Ceasefire Extensions

White House officials recently announced a unilateral extension of the ceasefire to facilitate a "window for diplomacy." However, Tehran remains skeptical of Washington's sincerity. While the U.S. claims Iran is privately lobbying to reopen the Strait to mitigate financial losses - estimated at $500 million daily. While the Iranian leadership publicly insists that they did not initiate military aggression and are ready for any outcome, including prolonged conflict.

Fresh violence erupted Wednesday when an Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) gunboat targeted a container ship northeast of Oman. The United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) confirmed the vessel sustained bridge damage after being fired upon without a VHF challenge. Iranian state media described the action as a lawful enforcement of their territorial waters, further complicating the proposed second round of peace talks in Islamabad.
