Abhishek Sharma's Explosive Fifty eliminates LSG from Playoff Race

Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) are out of the 2025 Indian Premier League playoff race following a six-wicket defeat to Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) on Monday, May 19th. Despite a strong start powered by half-centuries from Mitchell Marsh and Aiden Markram, LSG's innings lost momentum before an explosive, match-winning fifty from SRH opener Abhishek Sharma sealed their fate in a high-scoring encounter.

Lucknow's Innings

After being put into bat by SRH captain Pat Cummins, LSG openers Mitchell Marsh (65) and Aiden Markram (61) provided an excellent platform, amassing 108 runs without loss by the halfway mark of their innings. Both batsmen registered impressive half-centuries, Nicholas Pooran continued the momentum with an aggressive 45 off 26 balls. However, after being well-positioned for a massive total, LSG's innings faltered in the latter stages. They managed only 97 runs while losing seven wickets in the final ten overs, as SRH bowlers, led by Eshan Malinga (2/28) and Harshal Patel, utilized changes of pace effectively on a pitch that began to offer more grip for the older ball. LSG eventually finished on 205 for 7.

Sunrisers' Chase: Abhishek Sharma's onslaught

Sunrisers Hyderabad, already out of playoff contention and playing without Travis Head, approached the chase with remarkable aggression. The charge was led by Abhishek Sharma, who delivered a stunning display of power-hitting. He reached his half-century in just 18 balls, launching six sixes in his innings of 59 from a mere 20 deliveries. His assault, particularly during the seventh over where he took 28 runs off Ravi Bishnoi, effectively decided the contest early. Despite debutant LSG bowler Digvesh Rathi claiming the wickets of Abhishek and Ishan Kishan (35), the damage was done. Heinrich Klaasen (47) and Kamindu Mendis (31) guided SRH to their target with six wickets and ten balls to spare.

While Lucknow Super Giants started their innings impressively, their inability to capitalize in the death overs, coupled with Abhishek Sharma's breathtaking counter-attack, proved decisive. This victory for Sunrisers Hyderabad, though not altering their own playoff prospects, officially ends Lucknow's campaign, leaving Mumbai Indians and Delhi Capitals to contend for the final playoff position.
