Bhubaneswar, May 6: The Odisha government should install automated external defibrillators (AED) in public places to prevent deaths due to heart attack, said a senior cardiolgist..
Several state governments have installed AEDs in public places. A sudden cardiac arrest stops all heart activities due to an irregular heart rhythm. The victim becomes unconscious and needs ‘electrical shock.’ At this situation an AED can deliver an electric shock to the heart to restore its normal rhythm.
If an AED is used within three minutes of cardiac arrest, the chances are high for survival of the victim. Otherwise, the patient may go brain-dead, said cardiologist Dr Prabhat Kumar Dash.
Without immediate treatment, sudden cardiac arrest can lead to death. With rising cases of cardiac arrest in the state, there is a need to install AEDs at government offices, cinema halls, railway stations, bus stands and ambulances in Bhubaneswar. The employees should also get training for its use, added Dash.
