Indian Railways to launch AI-Powered ticketing system with fivefold increase in booking capacity

New Delhi, Jul 3: Indian Railways is set to introduce a major upgrade to its passenger reservation system, significantly enhancing ticket booking speed and overall user experience. The revamped system will be capable of processing 1.25 lakh ticket bookings per minute—five times the current capacity of 25,000 bookings per minute.

The upgrade is aimed at addressing frequent technical issues faced by passengers, particularly during Tatkal ticket bookings and peak reservation hours, when the existing system often slows down or crashes due to heavy traffic.

The announcement was made by the Centre for Railway Information Systems (CRIS) during its 41st Foundation Day celebrations on Wednesday. According to CRIS, the fivefold increase in booking capacity will substantially improve system performance and enable Indian Railways to efficiently handle the growing demand for online reservations.

With the enhanced infrastructure, passengers are expected to experience faster transactions and fewer instances of website or mobile app failures while booking tickets.

A senior railway official also highlighted the growing popularity of RailOne, Indian Railways' super app launched last year. Designed with a user-friendly interface, the app has been downloaded over 4.35 crore times and currently handles an average of 10 lakh transactions every day.

Indian Railways is also leveraging Artificial Intelligence (AI) to make its services smarter, more efficient and safer. AI-powered technologies are being deployed to improve train maintenance by identifying potential faults before they develop into major failures. This predictive maintenance approach is expected to reduce breakdowns, enhance operational efficiency and strengthen railway safety.

CRIS Managing Director GBL Satya Kumar said the primary objective behind the new booking system and AI-driven initiatives is to ensure that the benefits of technology reach ordinary citizens. He added that providing passengers with faster, more reliable and seamless services is key to transforming Indian Railways into a world-class transportation network.
