Indian judokas secure two stunning gold medals in Glasgow
Indian judokas Asmita Dey and Harsh Singh delivered spectacular performances to secure two gold medals on Friday at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland. These thrilling victories boosted India's total medal count to 19, bringing immense pride to the nation.
Golden Score Glory for Asmita Dey
Competing in the women's 48kg division, Asmita Dey claimed India's first judo gold of the tournament. She defeated Canadian athlete Heidi Quach in a nail-biting final match. Both grapplers fought intensely, frequently pushing each other to the edge of the mat. Quach initially took the lead with an early throw. Dey fought back hard, overcoming a Shido penalty to execute a quick throw and level the score.
Regulation time ended with both athletes tied, forcing the match into a Golden Score round. Dey kept her composure during this high-pressure extra period. She executed a perfectly timed throw near the boundary to win by Yuko with a 2-1 score. Earlier in the day, she secured her spot in the final by defeating Scotland's Sumer Shaw. Historically, Indian athletes have steadily improved their standing in international martial arts, and this latest triumph highlights their growing global competitiveness.
Harsh Singh Delivers Tactical Masterclass
Shortly after Dey's victory, Harsh Singh doubled the celebration by winning the men's 60kg gold medal. He faced Australia's Joshua Katz in the final showdown. Katz started aggressively, but Singh defended exceptionally well to prevent any scoring opportunities. The Australian nearly pinned Singh, but the Indian athlete quickly escaped and launched a fast counterattack.
At exactly 3 minutes and 19 seconds into the match, Singh found his opening. He executed a flawless throw and pinned Katz to the mat, earning a Waza-Ari score of 10-0. This decisive move instantly secured the Commonwealth Games title for Singh.
