Indian commercial space sector enters new era as Skyroot Aerospace puts Vikram-1 rocket into orbit

Skyroot Aerospace completely transforms Indian spaceflight with Vikram-1 success

India entered a fresh chapter in commercial spaceflight on Saturday when Skyroot Aerospace successfully sent its Vikram-1 rocket into orbit. Launching from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota, this seven-storey, all-carbon composite launch vehicle completed Mission Aagaman flawlessly on its very first try. All four stages functioned perfectly to deploy multiple payloads directly into Low Earth Orbit.

Private enterprises can now build and fly rockets independently in India. This flight validates recent government space sector reforms designed to democratize satellite deployment operations. Vikram-1 carried significant technology demonstration payloads from Grahaa Space, Cosmoserve, and DCubed, along with the company's own SCOPE experiment. It also carried a symbolic handwritten Vande Mataram postcard from Prime Minister Narendra Modi and supportive messages from former ISRO chairmen.

Engineering Excellence Achieved

Engineers at Skyroot designed Vikram-1 to carry up to 350 kilograms of cargo. They powered the vehicle with fully in-house propulsion systems featuring advanced 3D-printed rocket engines. Prime Minister Modi personally called founders Pawan Kumar Chandana and Naga Bharath Daka to congratulate their young team. He praised them for planting strong roots on the ground while reaching for the stars.

Skyroot Aerospace started operating in 2018 with a clear goal to make satellite launches affordable, reliable, and highly responsive. Former ISRO scientists founded the company to capture the rapidly growing small satellite market. Gathering critical engineering flight data from this successful orbital mission will allow them to refine their entire vehicle family. They now plan to establish a regular, commercial flight schedule to serve global clients and position India strongly in the international space economy.
