New Delhi, April 24: To enhance road safety, Union Minister Nitin Gadkari announced the introduction of a safety rating system for trucks and heavy commercial vehicles, similar to Bharat NCAP for passenger cars.
Speaking at a workshop on vehicle and fleet safety, Gadkari urged manufacturers to prioritize safety in vehicle design. He also mentioned plans to set standards for e-rickshaws and stressed their potential to boost employment.
With India leading globally in road accident deaths—about 1.8 lakh annually—Gadkari reaffirmed the government’s focus on safer highways, electric mobility, and reducing logistics costs.
New measures include regulating truck drivers’ working hours, establishing 32 driver training institutes, mandating AC cabins, and enforcing Advanced Driver-Assistance Systems (ADAS) in trucks.
