Mumbai, Aug 15: Should India have preferred split coaching options for different formats? Will there be a change in India's age old approach of one coaching unit for all formats?
Although, several international teams including England, South Africa and Pakistan have followed that model, but India are yet to think in that direction. India have so far suck to the idea of one coaching unit for all formats.
Will India have a change in their approach?
"No", clarified BCCI secretary Jay Shah in a recent media interaction. He stated even before hiring Gautam Gambhir as the Head Coach of Team India, the BCCI has made it clear that India will continue with one coaching team for all three formats.
However, there are a few big teams who have engaged separate coaches for separate formats. Like England deployed Brendon McCullum as the Test team coach and Marcus Trescothick as the interim white-ball coach.
Similarly, Pakistan and South Africa too have followed that model. While Jason Gillespie is taking care of Pakistan's red-ball format, Garry Kirsten is their white-ball head coach.
It can be recalled that recently India has engaged 42-year-old Gautam Gambhir as the Head Coach until December 2027. During Gambhir's stint, India will compete in five ICC tournaments.
But if there is a need for back-ups, India do have a strong pool of coaches from the National Cricket Academy. Even during Rahul Dravid's tenure as Head Coach, he was at times supplemented by his former Team India teammate VVS Laxman, who was on NCA duty, Shah added.
Earlier, Shah informed that former South African pacer Morne Morkel will join Team India's support staff unit as the Bowling Coach and his contract will start from September 1, 2024.
