Pakistan's Provocation

The diplomatic clash occurred during a high-level debate chaired by Pakistan’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister, Ishaq Dar. Dar used the platform to describe Jammu and Kashmir as an "internationally recognised disputed territory" and accused India of violating the Indus Waters Treaty.

India's Scathing Counter

In response, India’s Permanent Representative, Ambassador P. Harish, delivered a scathing critique. He drew a stark contrast between the two nations, describing India as a "mature democracy and growing economic power" while branding Pakistan a nation "mired in religious extremism, a safe haven for terrorism, and a habitual defaulter reliant on IMF bailouts."

Harish firmly reiterated that Jammu and Kashmir is an integral part of India and that any challenge to its sovereignty is unacceptable. He directly linked Pakistan to regional violence, citing the gruesome April 22 Pahalgam terror attack that killed 26 people, which he attributed to a proxy of the Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Taiba. He also referenced "Operation Sindoor," India's subsequent military response, as "focused, measured, and non-escalatory," noting that it was Pakistan that requested a de-escalation.

A Call for UN Reform

Beyond the direct rebuttal, the Indian envoy criticized Pakistan for using multilateral platforms to push false narratives. "It is inappropriate for a member of the Council to offer homilies while indulging in practices condemned by the global community," Harish stated, calling for zero tolerance for terrorism. He also used the opportunity to advocate for urgent reforms of the UN Security Council to ensure it is more representative of the current global landscape.

Ultimately, India's forceful response at the UN was a clear signal of its assertive diplomatic posture. By directly confronting Pakistan's claims and highlighting its record on terror and economic policy, India sought to reframe the debate and defend its national interests on the world stage.
