Ladakh activists bring Sonam Wangchuk to New Delhi dialogue
Climate activist Sonam Wangchuk will officially join the high-stakes political negotiations between regional representatives and the Union government scheduled for tomorrow in New Delhi.
Alongside Wangchuk, the Leh delegation features Chering Dorjay Lakrook, president of the Ladakh Buddhist Association, and Dorjay Stanzin, chief of the Ladakh Gonpa Association. Legal advisor Vikram Hegde will accompany the team to provide strategic support. Concurrently, the Kargil Democratic Alliance has sent its representatives, led by Asgar Karbalai and Sajad Hussain, who have already reached the national capital.
Ever since the constitutional autonomy of Jammu and Kashmir was revoked in 2019, creating two distinct Union Territories, local groups have consistently demanded constitutional safeguards to protect their sensitive high-altitude ecosystem and distinct cultural demographics.
This fresh diplomatic push arrives immediately after internal friction surfaced within the leadership.
