Well-marked low-pressure over Bay of Bengal: IMD issues alert; Malkangiri schools closed for students

Bhubaneswar, Sept 26: A low-pressure area over the Bay of Bengal has intensified into a well-marked low-pressure system and is expected to develop into a depression within the next 24 hours, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD). The system is likely to move northwestwards and cross the southern Odisha and northern Andhra Pradesh coasts by the morning of September 27.

Under its influence, heavy rainfall and strong surface winds with speeds reaching up to 50 km/h are expected to lash parts of southern Odisha and coastal Andhra Pradesh.

Taking precautionary measures in view of the IMD’s alert, the Malkangiri district administration has declared a holiday for all government and private schools across the district. However, the District Collector has directed all headmasters, teachers, and school staff to remain present at their respective institutions to ensure emergency preparedness.

Further, all government officials in the district have been instructed to stay stationed at their offices until further notice, as part of the administration’s preparedness to deal with any eventuality arising from the impending weather system.

The district authorities remain on high alert and have initiated proactive measures to minimize disruption and ensure public safety.
