Prayagraj, April 25: The Allahabad High Court has sharply criticized the Uttar Pradesh Police for registering FIRs against married couples who have wed of their own volition, calling it a disservice to society. In a ruling that quashed an FIR filed against a couple, the court emphasized the need for police to focus on more pressing matters rather than harassing young couples who have entered into consensual marriages.
A bench comprising Justices J J Munir and Tarun Saxena stressed the importance of respecting the age of majority and upholding constitutional rights, urging that this message be disseminated across the nation. The court expressed disapproval of the police's trend of investigating consensual marriages, a practice it described as a waste of resources that could be better utilized in addressing other criminal cases.
In response to the situation, the court instructed the Director General of Police (DGP) of Uttar Pradesh to take appropriate action to prevent such occurrences in the future.
