Sonam Wangchuk Sets Three Strict Conditions to Call Off Hunger Strike At Safdarjung Hospital

Wangchuk demands immediate government action on NEET to end fast

Climate activist Sonam Wangchuk will end his 21-day hunger strike today only if officials meet three specific demands. Police forcibly moved him from Jantar Mantar to Safdarjung Hospital. He firmly described this transfer as an unlawful confinement. In a handwritten note, he insisted the government must take full accountability for failures within the education system. He specifically highlighted the recent NEET question paper leaks.

Nationwide outrage over NEET discrepancies has deeply resonated in states like Odisha. This anger is driving students to demand immediate educational reforms. Reflecting this frustration, his second condition requires political leaders to guarantee action. They must promise to raise the paper leak controversy during the upcoming Parliament session. Declining health prevents him from joining today's planned march to Parliament. Therefore, his third stipulation requires top political figures to visit him personally. Leaders must offer a direct guarantee regarding his first two conditions before he agrees to eat. In his letter, he criticized his current environment. He noted that authorities have heavily restricted his freedom of movement, speech, and communication.

Ongoing Fight for Transparency

Wangchuk has spent years protesting for systemic improvements across educational frameworks. He recently joined the Cockroach Janta Party at Jantar Mantar. They are demanding the resignation of Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan over examination irregularities. Law enforcement intervened and transported him to a medical facility. They acted after doctors warned of potential organ failure.

Gitanjali Angmo, his wife, quickly petitioned the Delhi High Court to transfer him to a private medical center. Justice Mini Pushkarna denied any interim relief. She stated officials acted correctly by moving him since his health was deteriorating. She also noted doctors continue to monitor his condition closely. Senior advocate Vivek Tankha indicated that Angmo plans to challenge this ruling before a double-judge bench immediately.
