Shreyas Iyer set to replace Suryakumar Yadav as new India T20 captain

Shreyas Iyer takes over national T20 leadership responsibilities

Shreyas Iyer will take over the captaincy of the Indian men's T20 international cricket team, replacing Suryakumar Yadav. The decision emerged from a crucial Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) Apex Council meeting. Iyer will actively participate in the upcoming selection panel gathering on Saturday to finalise rosters for upcoming international assignments, including tours to Ireland and England.

The right-handed batter returns to the shortest international format following a stellar run in the 2026 Indian Premier League. He scored 498 runs for the Punjab Kings franchise, forcing his way back into national contention. His last appearance for the national T20 squad dates back to December 2023 against Australia.

Strategic Vision For The Future

Transitioning away from Suryakumar Yadav follows concerns regarding his individual batting form. Although he successfully led India to a T20 World Cup trophy defense earlier this year, his personal output dipped significantly. He managed only 242 runs across nine matches in that tournament and added just 270 runs during his subsequent domestic season with Mumbai Indians. Former selectors note that managing long-term plans for the 2028 global tournament requires looking at fresh options immediately.

Young left-handed batter Tilak Varma will likely secure the vice-captaincy role, indicating a complete refresh of the core leadership group under head coach Gautam Gambhir. Indian cricket selection panels run by the BCCI lean toward clean leadership transitions at the start of a fresh biennial cycle to avoid abrupt changes before major tournaments.

Upcoming International Schedule

  • Ireland Tour: Two T20 international fixtures starting on June 26.
  • England Tour: Five T20 matches followed by three one-day internationals.
