Puri, April 7: The Shree Jagannath Temple will soon undergo a major illumination upgrade with an estimated investment of ₹18 crore. The project will feature advanced laser-based 3D mapping lighting, enabling the temple to be clearly visible from a distance of around 1.5 kilometres at night.
In a bid to preserve the sanctity and heritage of the temple, authorities have decided against using coloured or flashing lights. Instead, the illumination will focus on highlighting key architectural elements such as the four gates, the sanctum tower (Vimana), Natamandap, Jagamohan, Meghanada Pacheri, and the inner enclosure. The Parikrama Project area will also be illuminated to enhance its visibility.
The decision was taken during a review meeting held on Monday under the chairmanship of District Collector and Deputy Chief Administrator Dibyajyoti Parida. Officials informed that the tender process for the project will commence shortly, while field surveys have already been completed.
The lighting arrangement, to be installed using projectors, is expected to enhance the temple’s spiritual ambience without compromising its structural integrity. Authorities have assured that the installation will strictly adhere to ASI guidelines, ensuring that no drilling or physical alterations are made to the heritage structure.
Additionally, nearby temples will also be illuminated to ensure better visibility from a distance. A demonstration of the proposed lighting system will be conducted before finalising the design and technology.
The project is being planned on the lines of illumination systems at prominent religious sites such as Mahakaleshwar and Ayodhya. The selected agency will also be responsible for maintaining the lighting system for a period of five years, officials said.
