New Delhi, January 27: The Supreme Court raised serious concerns regarding the backlog of acid attack cases across India and recommended more stringent measures to address the issue. In a significant move, the Court suggested the attachment of properties of convicted acid attackers to ensure victims receive meaningful compensation.
The Bench, led by Chief Justice of India (CJI) Surya Kant, was hearing a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) focused on the enforcement of guidelines previously established by the Court. During the proceedings, the Court took note of the fact that 15 High Courts had provided details on the pendency of acid attack cases.
According to a status report submitted to the apex court, Uttar Pradesh has the highest number of pending acid attack cases, with 198 cases. Other states with notable backlogs include Gujarat (114 cases), West Bengal (60 cases), Bihar (68 cases), and Maharashtra (58 cases).
