Puri, Ap 22: The construction of the iconic chariots for the world-famous Rath Yatra began on Tuesday, following the ceremonial Rath Katha Anukula performed on Akshaya Tritiya.
At the traditional chariot-building site, Rathakhala, craftsmen started work on the three tumbas, the circular axles of the chariot wheels. The Maharana sevayats began shaping large wooden logs into circular forms, while Karatiya sevayats sawed the logs into required pieces before handing them over for further crafting.
This year, the construction schedule has been extended due to an intercalary month of Jyeshtha, giving artisans 88 working days to complete the chariots instead of the usual 59. Officials and craftsmen expect the additional time to allow for greater precision and improved finishing in the final structures.
The chariot-building process continues to adhere to traditional rituals and specialized craftsmanship, reflecting the centuries-old heritage of the annual festival in Puri.
