Puri, June 22: Preparations for the annual Rath Yatra have gathered momentum, with craftsmen and servitors engaged in the final phases of chariot construction at the Rath Khala in Puri.
On Sunday night, the chariot builders offered the traditional Panti Bhoga to the Panchamahadev deities. Bhoi servitors constructed a special wooden enclosure for the ritual, with five separate chambers built for offering the sacred food. The offering was made after the divine couple assembled at the Rath Khala.
Meanwhile, Vishwakarma artisans are busy crafting the Kalasa, one of the most important components placed at the front top portion of the chariots. The structure is being prepared in several parts before being assembled together.
The artisans have completed the base work of the Kalasa and fitted 32 decorative petals in two layers. Sixteen petals were installed on the lower section, followed by another sixteen on the upper portion. An aluminium sheet has now been wrapped around the structure, which will later be painted by Chitrakar servitors. The Kalasa is being made using lightweight wood.
Construction work on the chariot doors is also nearing completion. Except for the four corners, most of the side panel work has been finished. Iron plates have been fixed to the wheel rims, while L-clamps are being used to strengthen various parts of the chariots.
Under the guidance of the chief Vishwakarma artisans, Bhoi servitors are carrying out the construction work. Rupakar, Ojha, Karatia and Chitrakar servitors are also engaged in their respective tasks.
Including assistants, a total of 227 craftsmen and servitors are currently involved in the construction of the three chariots ahead of the grand Rath Yatra festival.
