Paradip Port Township celebrates theatrical excellence at Canfest-2026 finale.
Paradip Port’s Jayadev Sadan transformed into a hub of intense drama as the 23rd National Theatre Festival, Canfest-2026, wrapped up its eight-day run with a stirring performance of "Khamosh! Adalat Jaari Hai!". Organised by the prominent theatre group Canmass, the festival reached its crescendo with this Hindi masterpiece written by Vijay Tendulkar. The Delhi-based Sri Ram Centre of Performing Arts brought the script to life under the sharp direction of Shri Avtar Sahni, leaving the local audience in deep reflection.
Distinguished Guests Celebrate Artistic Persistence
Prominent figures including PPA CME Sushil Nahak, Sr. DTM Akshay Sahu, and PPL unit head Palanisamy Velusamy graced the closing ceremony. Himanshu Khatua, Chairman of the Biju Pattnaik Film & Television Institute, joined eminent playwright Shri Prabodh Rath in commending Canmass for their tireless efforts. Their work ensures that the industrial landscape of Paradip remains a fertile ground for diverse cultural expressions and high-caliber performing arts.
A Mock Trial with Real Consequences
Vijay Tendulkar’s narrative remains a sharp critique of societal double standards. The story follows an amateur troupe that stages a mock trial to pass the time, only to turn their collective vitriol toward a schoolteacher, Leela Benare. What begins as a game evolves into a brutal interrogation of her private life, motherhood, and personal choices.
Enduring Relevance in Odisha’s Cultural Space
Odisha has a storied history of folk and proscenium theatre, often using the stage to challenge traditional norms. This production echoed that heritage by exposing the "constant court" society holds over women. By highlighting the hypocrisy of patriarchy, the play resonated with the Paradip audience, proving that Tendulkar’s 20th-century insights remain startlingly fresh in 2026.
Canmass Secretary Sriman Narayan Misra concluded the event by expressing gratitude to the sponsors and media. He reaffirmed the organization's commitment to bringing even more innovative productions to the Port Township next year.
