Cuttack, Ap 2: Odisha celebrated the centenary celebrations of the formation of India’s first linguistic state, a landmark event that marks the state’s struggle for recognition and its eventual success in 1936. The 2026 centenary is expected to reflect on the state’s historical journey, its victories, and the growth of its cultural and social identity. However, the commemorative activities surrounding this milestone are overshadowed by ongoing challenges.

The "Utkal Sammilani," a movement led by Utkal Gourab Madhusudan Das, played a pivotal role in promoting Odisha’s language, culture, and social development. The movement laid the foundation for the establishment of the state of Odisha. Yet, despite its historical significance, some key memorials, such as the centenary memorial pillar in Cuttack, are either damaged or mired in disputes.

In 2003, the Odisha government initiated the construction of a centenary memorial column to honor the movement, but only a small portion of land has been set aside for it. Development plans for the site have been disrupted, with much of the land still under dispute, raising concerns about the future of the memorial.

While the government is hosting "Odisha Dibasa" celebrations from April 1 to April 14, featuring a variety of state-level events, the sites linked to the Utkal Sammilani legacy are struggling to retain their relevance. The location that once housed the Utkal Sammilani memorial is now embroiled in land disputes, and its historical significance appears to be diminishing in the eyes of the current administration.

Additionally, both state and district authorities have failed to prioritize the preservation of the Utkal Sammilani memorial. This is evident in the lack of investment in development projects aimed at honoring the legacy of this pivotal movement, which formed the foundation of the modern state's identity.

As the centenary of Utkal Sammilani approaches, there are growing concerns that it is not receiving the attention it deserves. Despite being a crucial moment in Odisha’s history, the legacy of Utkal Sammilani and its leaders, particularly Utkal Gourab Madhusudan Das, seems to be increasingly neglected. These leaders, who laid the groundwork for a unified cultural identity, would likely have hoped for a more respectful acknowledgment of their contributions during this milestone year.

With government initiatives and development plans frequently stalling, the future of these critical commemorative sites remains uncertain. Odisha’s rich history continues to be overshadowed by modern-day challenges, leaving its heritage at risk of being forgotten.
