Mamata Banerjee Blames Police for Violence During TMC Protest, Alleges Breakdown of Law and Order

Kolkata, July 8: Trinamool Congress (TMC) chief and former West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Wednesday accused the police of failing to provide security during the party's protest march over the alleged rape and murder of a 12-year-old girl in Baruipur. She alleged that the administration allowed violence despite the rally having permission from the Calcutta High Court.

Addressing party workers, Banerjee claimed that the police failed to maintain law and order and did not act effectively in cases involving crimes against women. She questioned whether the prevailing situation reflected the "change" that the people of West Bengal had expected.

Banerjee alleged that violence took place along the rally route, including areas around Kalighat, her residence, and Ballygunge, despite court approval for the march. She also criticised the BJP, accusing it of creating unrest and referring to alleged financial irregularities linked to donations collected in the name of the Ram Mandir.

Holding the police and the state administration responsible, Banerjee claimed that the High Court's permission for the rally was not honoured in spirit. She alleged that BJP supporters were allowed to disrupt the protest and warned that the police's actions could amount to contempt of court.

The TMC chief further alleged that law and order in the state had deteriorated and accused the police of targeting TMC workers instead of ensuring public safety. She reiterated her condemnation of the BJP and demanded accountability for the incidents during the protest.

The TMC organised the protest march to demand justice in the alleged rape and murder of the minor girl in Baruipur.
